JUNE MEETING was held on Sun., July l, 2001 hosted by the Angela & Robert Van

Etten at their home in Stuart with 37 members and guests in attendance. Pres. Chris O’Neill called the meeting to order at 2:45 p.m.

There was a discussion on the Jack Fund Guidelines. Keith Markbrieter, a member of the committee and not able to attend the meeting, was on the speaker phone during this discussion. Angela said we now have three applications to the fund which cannot be considered until we have our guidelines in place. She feels that there are these

clauses in the proposed guidelines which need to be changed.

As to the original wording for the committee members who manage the fund –

3 at-large members should be changed to 3 other members. Without this change

neither Jason Morganthal or Marianna Ayers would be eligible as committee

members because they are not at-large members at this time but rather officers.

We should restrict our funds because of the condition of the stock market these

days. Instead, Angela suggests 60% in fixed equity and 40% in Stocks and Bonds.

50% in moderate and 50% in conservative with no aggressive funds.

Instead of paying out 5% of the fund annually, Angela suggests 7 % and annual

fund raising to help replace the funds that are paid out.

Keith doesn’t think we should have to fund raise. He suggests limiting the amount paid out per year or setting a deadline for applications. Since most of the medical and surgical needs of our members are emergencies we don’t think it would be possible to set deadlines for applications. Chris said he is fine with only using the interest so as not to deplete the fund. At the present time we are earning about 5%, and with three applications at the present time we could use the whole 5% at one time with no money for future applications this year. The fund, also, is to be used for education or things like helping first time conference goers. Debbie Koury suggested that maybe we could use

2 % for medical and 2 % for other purposes.

Edward Foster and Chris O’Neill asked what if we depleted all our funds on medical and then had nothing left for educational needs? Ken Miller asked could we break the funds down into certain amounts for each month and if it is not used it could be rolled over to the next month? Angela pointed out that no matter what amount is set we could run out of funds anyway. Chris pointed out that we always had the Kopits Fund and when we used some of the money we would do a fundraiser to put some or all of it back into the fund. Angela suggested that we could fundraise such as 50/50 at the regional. Pat Lang said that the people who cooperate with fundraisers should get first consideration on applications. Angela suggested that we change "members only" to "members or persons well known to our chapter". Ken asked if national took control of all the money will they take control of our funds also? Angela said no, according to the

Will the money must be spent locally even if it is administered nationally. Chris then asked if we could go through the changes item by item and vote on them. Angela read the changes proposed and made a proposal that we adopt the Jack Fund Guidelines as stated. The vote was unanimous.

Chris spoke directly with Keith Markbreiter and Keith doesn’t agree with a fund raiser for the Jack Fund annually. He also disagrees with a 7 % annual payout. He

said the essence of the fund will not be protected for the future. He wanted to know if

the fund could be amended in the future. It can be by advertising the amendment in 2

newsletters and with a vote of those present at the meeting.

THOUGHTS FOR THE MONTH:

"There Was Life Before The Computer"

An application was for employment Memory was something you lost with age

A program was a TV show A CD was a bank account!

A cursor used profanity And if you had a broken disk,

A keyboard was a piano! It would hurt when you found out!

Compress was something you did Log on was adding wood to a fire

to garbage Hard drive was a long trip on the road

Not something you did to a file A mouse pad was where a mouse lived

And if you unzipped anything in public And a backup happened in your commode!

You’d be in jail for awhile!

I guess I’ll stick to my pad and paper

Cut- you did with a pocket knife And the memory in my head

Paste- you did with glue I hear nobody’s been killed in a computer

A web was a spider’s home crash

And a virus was the flu! But when it happens they wish they were

dead!

"THE ‘IF’ OF INNER STRENGTH"

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,

If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with you troubles,

If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,

If you can overlook when people take things out on you, when through

no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

Then, you are almost as good as a cat or a dog.
